Workshop Overview:

This workshop will be focussed on helping you to produce an exciting image from a subject of your
choice.

Tom will demonstrate watercolour in the morning and acrylics in the afternoon. These demonstrations will cover a range of techniques and approaches looking at composition, shapes, simplification, light and shadow, colour and points of interest… Essentially Tom will be sharing ideas on creating an exciting painting rather than copying the subject exactly.

Please note that attendees are welcome to work purely on one medium of their choice, including pastels, watercolours, acrylics, oils, charcoal too… if you wish, bring a couple of mediums along! Tom is happy to advise on all!

We will also cover the basic of tonal values, colour mixing and using colour, as well as various techniques and approaches to each medium which will naturally filter into the day.

Materials:
No special materials required for this workshop. Please simply bring your normal painting gear, whatever medium you wish to work in. Below is a simple guide as to what Tom will be using/recommending.

Paints/Colours:
Your normal watercolour favourites will be fine (colours below)

For acrylics, you can simply use normal soft body acrylics. Tom uses free flowing acrylics for watery stages (but watery soft body works fine). For thicker paints, Tom uses heavy body acrylics (soft body can work ok here, please see below.)

If you would like to explore using thicker paint then buying a heavy body Titanium White can be very useful, and/or Impasto or thickening gel. Tom will have some if people would like to try it. Colours for painting mediums is a simple cool and warm of each primary plus a few extras.

  • Prussian or Phthalo Blue

  • Ultramarine or Cobalt Blue (you could also bring Prussian, Phthalo and Cerulean…)

  • Cadmium, Vermillion, Napthol or Permanent Red

  • Alizarin Crimson, Quinacridone Red or Cadmium Red deep

  • Aureolin, Lemon Yellow or similar

  • Cadmium Yellow, New Gamboge, Hansa Yellow or similar

  • Titanium White for acrylics - a white gouache or watercolour can be useful for watercolour

        paintings.

Useful extra colours: Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Orange, Purple and Green.

Sundries:

  • Palette and brushes

  • Spray bottle

  • Any mediums required for oils or acrylics

  • Board & tape if needed

  • Some sort of easel if wanted (or something to prop up gummed block or board)

  • Kitchen roll/rags

  • Apron

  • Covering for the table

  • Jar/water pot etc

  • Reference photos - tablet/phone/print off

Brushes:
Your normal brushes for any medium will be fine.

Tom uses a larger flat brush for blocking in and a couple of smaller brushes for details when using
acrylics. For watercolour Tom uses a large mop, a medium round and a smaller round.

Substrate:

Something to paint on - whether it be watercolour paper/pad or gummed block
OR
for acrylics, strong thick paper, either watercolour paper or acrylic paper. You can work on canvas board or stretched canvas; however the techniques Tom will be showing are best on thick paper.
Size wise Tom usually recommends whatever size you are comfortable with; bearing in mind it’s generally better to tackle a few smaller pieces in a day than slog over one big one - however, please feel free to bring whatever size you like! Tom will be working on A3 / 12” x 16” approx.

Reference photos:
Tom advises you to bring something that you are excited to paint! Ideally obvious shadows and light or something interesting happening with colour or the subject itself ie movement or interesting shapes… As this workshop is focussed on you producing an artwork from your own images, please ensure that you have a good image printed or on an ipad. Photos can also be uploaded from websites like unsplash.com is. This is a great source of copyright
free images.

Venue: Willersey Village Hall, Main Street, Nr Broadway, WR12 7PL. The lane leading to
the car park and hall is opposite the garage.

The hall will be open from 9.30am, with the course starting at 10.00am. We’ll have a break for lunch at a suitable time for about 40 minutes. Please bring your own packed lunch. The course will end at 4pm.

Refreshments: Tea, Coffee and Biscuits will be available throughout the day.

Payment: Please make your payment and use the Booking Reference Code: WTS
